The "Joe" With A Tow Strap

There are several ways to tow a vehicle. You can push or pull a vehicle with another vehicle to a destination by various means. One of those means is using a tow strap.

HOW TO TOW WITH A TOW STRAP?

It's tricky towing a vehicle with a tow strap, heavy duty rope, chain, etc. First you will need to have a vehicle powerful enough to tow the desired vehicle. Two driver's are required to tow using this method.
Typically, here's how you would tow a vehicle with a tow strap:

1. Hook up tow strap to the vehicle that's doing the towing onto a strong point near the rear of the vehicle and out of harms way from any moving parts. A tow rich would be ideal or the frame of the vehicle as well.
2. Hook up the other end of the tow strap to a strong point of the front of the vehicle that's being towed. Same thing with the towing vehicle, make sure it's not on or near any moving parts. The frame of the vehicle is ideal.
3. Start up towing vehicle. Turn on hazard lights
4. Startup vehicle that's being towed if it's able to. If vehicle can't be started, turn the key to on so that the steering wheel will not lock and vehicle can be steered easily. Make sure hazard lights are on.
5. While "towee" driver is holding down the brake, have the tow driver slowly move forward to tighten the tow strap.
6. When tow strap is tight towee must slowly let go of the brake to enable being pulled.

The "goal" with the tow strap is to keep the strap tight and to accelerate the tow slowly and stop slowly. To do this, both "tower" and "towee: must work in unison.

The "key" is to let the "towee" lead in stopping when need. So, when a stop is needed, the "towee" must brake slowly and "pull" the "tower" to a stop, hence keeping the strap tight.
When pulling back up again, "tower" must slowly accelerate and pull the vehicle. "towee" must maintain the tightness of the strap by giving the "tower" resistance to pull by using the brakes.


Blah, blah, blah... So on and so forth. The bottom line is, do-it-yourself towing with a tow strap IS NOT WORTH IT! Not only is it complicated, it is very unsafe and hazardous to you, others, and your vehicles. DO NOT DO IT!
